- Abimiku Ewuga, his counsel, said he would appeal the judgement The Nigerian Air Force on Tuesday, August 15, sentenced Airman Kalu Bernard to death for killing his lover, Solape Oladipupo, aka Shomzy Shomzy, on March 12, 2017. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the judgement started at about 9:00 am and lasted till 4:00 pm for a break.
The panellists reconvened at 7:30 pm to continue with the 70-page court findings. The judge advocate, Flight Lieutenant MA Umoh, reportedly listed the eight-count charges against the 21-year-old Kalu to include murder, house breaking, impersonation, attempted murder, among others.
The report said the defence counsel, Abimiku Ewuga, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy. According to him, Kalu was his family’s breadwinner.
However, the president of the court, Group Captain Elisha Bindul, declared Kalu guilty in six out of the eight counts in his final judgement. He, therefore, sentenced him to death by hanging, subject to the confirmation of the conveying authority. Speaking with journalists after the judgement, Ewuga said he would appeal the ruling. Officer Kalu Bernard had on March 12, 2017, broken into Oladipupo’s home before shooting her in the neck at close range on the suspicion that she was in a love relationship with another man.
The incident happened at Corporal and Below Quarters, Compound 9, Air Force Base, Makurdi, Benue state. According to NAIJ.com recently reported that the jealous Air Force officer, Lieutenant Kalu, who shot dead his girlfriend has been arrested and his currently in custody. Lieutenant Kalu allegedly shot his girlfriend/colleague, Oladipupo Solape, to death on Sunday, March 12, in Markurdi Benue state.
